"The Help" By "Kathryn Stockett"
Little Section Quote Conversation
"Miss Celia, you got a lot more to be grateful for than me"
"I know." She looks at her fancy kitchen like it's something that tastes bad. "I never dreamed I'd have this much."
"Well ain't ya lucky."
"I've never been happier in my whole life."
I leave it at that. Underneath all that happy, she sure doesn't look happy. (PG 53)
As shown above this is a conversation from the book "The Help" which is pretty much a powerful quote said. This best means that ones happiness isn't always bought with money, one can be a billionaire and yet not happy. As shown above Ms Celia the white lady is a billionaire living In a big house with anything one can dream of. But on the other hand, she is disappointed when she looks at the marvelous kitchen in disgust, she doesn't feel satisfied with the way she lives or what she has. Just like when you eat rotten food I can imagine her expression like that. Adding on to what Minny the slave said was underneath all that happy she doesn't look happy. Maybe Ms. Celia's husband doesn't treat her well or maybe she doesn't have friends. All these could be effects in why she isn't happy living a rich life. Lastly what I can add on to is that Ms Celia doesn't want to tell her husband that she has Minny an African American women doing all the housework for her, this shows how maybe she and her husband have no trust or good relationship with each other. One needs to be honest and have trust in everything they do or they will be unhappy for as long as they are doing it.
I chose this quote because in our present day world people tend to think that money can buy happiness like buy one a car or house. But really I think happiness' definition is being with your family or loved one, being with someone through your struggles and happiness'. One can live in a mud house and be so much more happier than one in a ma chant just because they have family or trust with them.

Commentary 1 (September 28,2014)
After reading some pages of the help I was truly amazed at how powerful this book is and I understood really why almost everybody rates this book as a number one choice. In this book "The Help" by "Katherine Stockett" it talks about two African American ladies named Aibleen and Minny who work for white ladies. This book describes their struggle of their everyday chores, the racism that occurs and how they both overcome it. I admire Aibleen the most, Aibleen unlike Minny is a very cooperative and diplomatic type of person.
Throughout the text Aibleen acts like a mother to the little white girl named Mae Mobley. One would assume that a n African American lady wouldn't really care about a mean white ladies children but, on the other hand Aibleen treats Mae like her own. It is best portrayed in the text when she says "I rush to get her but Miss Leefolt get there first. Her lips is curled back from her teeth in a scary smile. Miss Leefolt slap baby girl on the back a her bare legs so hard I jump from the sting" (PG22). This best illuminates how as soon as she Mae getting best she felt empathetic for her jumping out of her own seat. On the other hand if it was another slave who worked their most likely they wouldn't have cared because it isn't their business. Lastly when Aibleen says "I'm so glad she hit me instead a her mama, cause I don't know what that women would of done to her" (PG22) this really shows how Aibleen is thankful that Mae the baby hit her instead of her own MOM because she didn't want her to get hurt more by her mom.
This is why I admire Aibleen, she may be an African American slave but, she stands up for what's right and she cares for children as if they were her own. I truly admire her and I hope that others can understand why I bielieve this.

Spring Break ASSIGHNEMNT
As the Alchemist once said “To realize one’s destiny is a person’s only obligation”. Paulo Coelho’s novel The Alchemist explains the story of a shepherd whom searches for his personal legend. He comes across omens, a king, gypsies and arabs in order to follow his dream and get to the Egyptian Pyramids. Of course he encounters many obstacles but, he always remembers the king’s wise words of “ when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it”. The Alchemist should be a text that should be read by all high schoolers, but rather individually because the lessons derived from this text is different for each individual.
Through multiple attempts of allegory and analogy in this text, it allows me to state that this text should be read by all high schoolers but, rather individually. Allegory is” a story in which the characters and events are symbols that stand for ideas about human life or for a political or historical situation”. Throughout the story’s multiple attempts of allegory said by the Alchemist like “... the fear of suffering is worse than suffering itself” and “To realize one’s destiny is a person’s only obligation” are big examples of allegory through the text. These meaningful quotes can mean different things to each individual and not two people think alike or feel alike; especially young adults. Also analogy which is “the act of comparing two things that are alike in some way” helps contribute to my argument. Lines such as “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure” and “Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure” are aswell big attempts of analogy.
As portrayed above these following examples of allegory and analogies are different quotes of understandings towards a person’s life, feelings and goals. Each highschooler or young adult has their own personal legend, their own dreams and goals. When one reads this story they have a different view on their dreams and if one reads it as a class they will never be able to really cherish, understand and feel the words the author is writing. This is why I believe that the text The Alchemist should be read by high schoolers but, rather individually because the lessons derived from this text is different for each individual. Everyone has a personal legend, they're trying to find and they are their own leaders.

Good Reads Post 2 : Americanah
Starting over in a new environment is something that we have all felt and experienced. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Americanah explains the story of a girl named Ngozi and a young boy named Obinze whom fall in love in their small Lagos town in Nigeria. As a result of their countries governmental issues many obstacles arise in between both Ngozi and her lover. In search of a better education and life Ngozi takes the risk of moving to the America’s to earn her degree and leave her lover, family as well as hometown. . Of course she encounters many obstacles and the feeling of alienation but, she is determined to do well and come back home one day. Americanah should be a text that should be read by all high schoolers, but rather individually because the lessons derived from this text is different for each individual.
Through multiple attempts of internal/external conflicts and themes in this text, it allows me to state that this text should be read by all high schoolers but, rather individually. Theme is “the subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a person's thoughts, or an exhibition; a topic.” Throughout the story, multiple attempts of various thought provoking themes were being created. Themes such as love, family, separation, isolation and culture. Through conflict which is “a struggle between the protagonist and another character against nature or some outside force” helps contribute to my argument. The protagonist faces lots of internal conflicts of feeling like an alien in her new environment. The sense of isolation and separation are main themes. When Ngozi which is the protagonist's fake name goes to file paperwork the lady, she was practically spelling out the words for her when she was speaking to her because she felt that she was an immigrant and supposedly does not understand her.
When Cristina the lady at the job interview desk says “I.Need.You.To.Fill.Out.A.Couple.Of.Forms.Do.You.Understand.How.To.Fill.These.Out?” the way the writer includes a period in between every word portrays how the speaker is stopping at every word and in a way speaking slowly. As human beings when we stop at every word we most likely are talking like robots. Ngozi states afterwards “she realized that Cristina Tomas was speaking like that because of her, her foreign accent, and she felt for a moment like a small child, lazy-limbed and drooling”. The word her is italicized showing that because of Ngozi being different and an immigrant, she was the reason why the lady was speaking to her differently.
This as well can be an external conflict because her environment surrounding her has an assumption that because she is an immigrant she does not understand what they mean. Even though the lady might have been trying to help, if I was in the protagonist's position I would still feel different because I am getting treated differently from other people. As the protagonist had stated she felt like a kid and was drooling, drooling as if she does not know anything and is dumb in a way.
As portrayed above these are just some literary elements that was in the book. Each highschooler or young adult has felt being isolated, at least once in their life time. To some individuals this story might be relatable and others might rethink the way they might treat others... for the better. As a reader I enjoyed reading this book because of it’s diversity and each individual may have various thoughts on this text. This is why I believe that the text Americanah should be read by high schoolers but, rather individually because the lessons derived from this text is different for each individual.
